For months, Michael has been working on setting up classes to teach students about safe sex practices. In our area, sex education has not been taught and the students are suffering from the consequences. Thailand is an extremely conservative country with a teen pregnancy problem.
Michael’s coworkers were incredibly apprehensive about teaching students about safe sex practices. Michael was persistent and slowly collected the needed materials for the first class. He recruited the gym teacher and then the two created lessons for eighty-four 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students.
We were terrified of how the students would react. We thought that they would be silly or incredibly embarrassed. Their reactions were perfect. They were curious, interested, and said their thank you’s 100 times. During the powerpoint, students took notes without prompting. They were focused the entire time and are already asking about the next class.
On the first, we celebrated our fifth year of marriage in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Siem Reap was a bustling city with nearly everyone speaking some English which made everything easier. I was so impressed with the language skills and the kindness of the Cambodian people. We explored Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples, biked the city, ate delicious food, indulged in massages, played putt putt (don’t ask Michael who won) and spent too much time in the pool. It was simply a lovely time to be thankful for our love.
This past holiday weekend we visited Koh Samet. We traveled to the south were it was practically deserted and skinny enough to see both sides of the island. We had the sunrises on one side and the sunsets on the other side. It was wonderful to be able to swim on east side and climb along the rocks on the west.
We found a cute beachfront property and asked for the cheapest room possible. The owner let us know they only had one room that was cheaper because it came without air-conditioning and was in a tree. Treehouse? Yes, please. Traveling on a Peace Corps budget always ends up being some sort of an adventure.
